Bi-Monthly Mentorship Intensive: Pain Neuroscience
This course is available for OSS Employees and Traveler Staff with Active Contracts

Course Description:

Chronic pain which is characterized as pain lasting more than three months has been reported in 116 million people within the United States - approximately 37% of the population. Pain is a large reason why patients seek medical care, yet it has been reported that most healthcare practitioners' educational training related to pain is lacking. The mean time dedicated to training physicians regarding pain has been reported to be 11 didactic hours throughout their medical education. Physical therapy professional training provides a mean of 31 hours with pain-specific content spread out throughout clinical training. Inadequate training can result in insufficient or inappropriate treatment. In 2021, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy (AOPT) published a pain education manual. The intent of this mentorship course is to progress the attendee's competency in the following eight domains: (1) epidemiology of pain, (2) diagnosis of pain, (3) pain neuroscience, (4) factors for chronic pain, (5) PT assessment of pain, (6) PT role on the pain team, (7) conservative management, and (8) medical management.

At completion of this 8 CEU course, the attendee will be familiar with the following topics:

  • The learner will understand the multidimensional nature of pain from an individual and societal perspective.
  • The learner will recognize the diagnosis of pain and pain conditions.
  • The learner will understand the neurophysiological mechanisms involved in somatic, neuropathic and visceral pain.
  • The learner will be able to recognize the key risk factors that contribute acute pain to chronic pain.
  • The learner will be able to measure psychological, social, and physiological factors as well as function and other various features of pain.
  • The learner will understand how pain affects many body systems and how it requires interprofessional health care providers.
  • The learner will know of the physical therapist's role in the non-pharmacologic management of pain.
  • The learner will understand the evidence-based pharmacological and medical management options for pain.

Coffee and light snacks will be provided, and the attendees will break for an hour independent lunch.
